Effect of Ethionine on the Photosynthesis , Respiration , and Transpiration of Leaf of Cut Rose (cv . Red Sandra) during Vaselife

Abstract
Photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, chlorophyll content, and water balance were measured in order to investigate the effects of preservative solutions on the senescence of cut rose (cv. Red Sandra) leaf during vaselife. Cut roses were held in basal medium (BS, 2% sucrose + 200 ppm 8HQS), SONK1 (BS + 0.1mM ethionine), commercial Chrysal (0.5%; Pokon & Chrysal), or distilled water as a control. BS and SONK1 solution containing sucrose reduced photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll content but stimulated respiration rate of leaf during vaselife as compared to control. On the other hand, Chrysal solution reduced photosynthesis rate rapidly and maintained the highest respiration rate of leaf among treatments from the beginning of vaselife, finally caused leaves to abscise in 6 days. Ethionine added in the BS solution (SONK1) appeared to be not effective in maintaining leaf photosynthesis and respiration rate during vaselife, while it was found to improve water balance by continuous stimulation of water and carbohydrate transportation from the base of stem held in preservative solution to flower as compared to BS only.
